AREZZO
The charming town of Arezzo, some 43 miles southeast of Florence, is a lovely place to celebrate your Italian wedding.
The town is best known for the 14th century Basilica di San Francesco, whose chapel, the Cappella Bacci, holds a stunning fresco cycle painted by Piero della Francesca.
On a par with Michaelangelo's frescoes in Rome, these works have recently been restored to their full glory. The colors, detail and fascinating use of symmetry all enhance their splendor.
There is much more to discover in Arezzo. The town is known for its countless jewelers, goldsmiths and antiques showrooms, plus it also holds a regular antiques market. Some beautiful buildings face onto the imposing Piazza Grande, including traditional wooden balconied apartments, the 16th century Loggia di Vasari and the Palazzetto della Fraternità dei Laici, with its Gothic ground floor and 15th century upper stories.
Close by is the tranquil 12th century church Piere di Santa Maria. Arezzo's duomo overlooks the town, located at its highest point. Begun in the late 13th century, the building contains elements from many different eras.
Other features of Arezzo include a Roman amphitheater with a monastery built into the wall. The monastery contains the town's archaeological museum which displays Roman artifacts.
Meanwhile, the 15th century Palazzo Bruni-Cocchi houses the museum of medieval and modern art, with works from the 13th to the 18th centuries. This quiet and charming town is filled with romance and is a really picturesque place to get married. Your wedding in Arezzo is sure to be unforgettable.
