Weddings in Matera

One of the most romantic and unique settings in all of Italy, perfect for weddings in all seasons

Imagine your wedding in Matera; a stunning ancient city of caves built into a rocky hillside with the most breathtaking of views.

Known for it's "sassi", which is Italian for large stones, but in Matera this is the fascinating area in the historical centre where the cave dwellings date back thousands of years to prehistoric times. Many of these caves have now been converted into luxury accommodations, romantic candlelit restaurants, spas and cosy cafes and bars, making it the perfect location for the couple searching for a unique but magical location.

The views by day stretch for miles and by night, the caves are illuminated by candles and warm lighting. The majestic but cosy feeling, as well as the types of wedding locations to be found in Matera (a mix of panoramic terraces and romantic caves) are beautiful in all temperatures. To get married in Matera means you can consider all seasons for your perfect day.

The houses are carved out of stone and built on top of each other. Step onto one of the narrow lanes between houses..and you're actually standing on the roof of the house below!

Matera is an exciting destination with a feeling of innovation and renewal, whilst completely respecting the history. The rock churches have been renovated and frescoes restored. The culinary culture thrives, using the fabulous wine and local produce typical of the area and southern Italian regions. No wonder Matera was declared a UNESCO World Hertiage site in 1993 and the European Capital of Culture in 2019 with its vibrant and intriguing character.

Matera has an underground city; a vast system of water channels and canals, some with enormous, vaulted spaces supported by carved pillars which are navigable by boat, like cathedrals on the water. Other attractions in the area include Matera Cathedral, built in typical Apulian Romanesque style and Parco della Murgia Materana. Artisan workshops can be discovered whilst wandering through the narrow stone labyrinth. Matera is close to Puglia (Apulia), an area famous for its countryside, food, beautiful beaches and trulli houses.

Matera has a history reputed to be one of the oldest in the world. It is the capital of the region of Basilicata, which lies between Puglia to the east and Campania to the west. Bari Airport in Puglia is just 40 miles away. The region has mountains, forests and coastlines on both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. Matera is a popular destination for the film industry too. Many films have been set there including the James Bond film, "No Time to Die" and Mel Gibson chose it as the setting for his 2004 film, "The Passion of the Christ".

The stunning locations for Matera weddings are ideal for a unique, romantic and unforgettable experience. What a backdrop for a magnificient wedding!
