Cathedral in Amalfi

The Cathedral of Amalfi

The Bizantine Duomo

Catholic wedding ceremonies in Amalfi take place in the marvellous Duomo of St. Andrew the Apostle whose remains are kept in the crypt. Its present fa?ade, brilliant with mosaics, is in Oriental style; its bronze doors, the first ones to appear in Italy, were given to Amalfi by Pantaleone di Mauro Comite, a noble man from Amalfi, who melted them in the 11th century in Constantinople where he lived and led the Imperial Party.

This is undoubtedly one of the most impressive churches of Italy. The interior is a 10th century Romanesque skeleton in an 18th century Baroque dress. The transept and choir are 13th century.

The duomo rises proudly at the end of steep steps that dominates that lively piazza where it is possible to admire a beautiful 18th century fountain.
